The Walsh Gallery at Seton Hall Presents “Uncommon Threads” Monday, November 2 – Friday, December 11  2009 OPENING RECEPTION:  Thursday Nov. 5 – pm to 9pm     The Walsh Gallery at Seton Hall University is pleased announce the upcoming exhibition, “Uncommon Threads,” a group exhibition of contemporary art which explores the potential of fabric as an artistic medium.  The show highlights work which defies common conceptions surrounding fiber art, which is traditionally perceived as a craft medium.  Artists working at the intersection of art and design illustrate the ways in which fabric is being used to claim a place in the realm of conventional studio arts such as sculpture and painting.  An excellent example of this approach is Julie Floersch’s quilt, “Things Falls Apart,” which is sculptural, yet made using traditional craft techniques.  Artists range in age sex, geography, academic training and artistic paradigm, illustrating the dizzying variety of approaches being applied the same medium. Co-curators, Howard Hurst and Jeanne Brasile anticipate that visitors will appreciate the sumptuous nature of textile art as well as the inexhaustible capabilities of the materials.  Local, national and international artists will be featured in this exhibition.  In addition, a full-color exhibition catalogue will be available.  The Walsh Gallery is free and open to the public Monday through Friday 10:30am to 4:30pm.
